Socialist Cartoons

What is this about?

When I was growing up after the counterrevolution in the ashes of post-apocalyptic Yugoslavia, everything that had been sacred just a few years earlier was discarded with the inflow of dollars and deutsche marks. Even though the "civilized world" imposed all kinds of embargoes on us, making it impossible for mothers to buy proper food and medicine for their children, all in the name of human rights and democracy, the influx of idiotic Western cartoons continued, such as the disgusting Cow and Chicken, which made me gag even as a child. Suddenly, Cartoon Network was everywhere, broadcasting for a few hours on local TV channels here and there. I later read that this was almost the same situation in every post-socialist country, like Poland, the Czech Republic, Russia, Bulgaria, and so on.

Cow and Chicken

Cow and Chicken

Looking back, I’m 100% certain that this was, in a way, a social experiment. A MKUltra style brainwashing for a whole generation. Don’t get me wrong, there are some beautiful Western cartoons, like Winnie the Pooh, but somehow, we never got to watch those.

Sadly, I grew up on degenerate cartoons, like the aforementioned Cow and Chicken, simply because my parents had to leave me home alone while they went to work, and I didn’t have anything better to do. We only had about four TV channels anyway.

With the technology we have today, I’m lucky enough to be able to choose what my daughter can watch as she grows up. I don’t want her to be traumatized by shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog or confronted with sexual themes from Johnny Bravo or whatever else is on TV nowadays.

I want the cartoons she watches to convey messages of friendship, cooperation, a sense of duty, and pride in one's own accomplishments.

The Adventures of the Mole

The Little Mole

Following is a list of cartoons I’ve collected that are free of excessive violence, hypersexualization, consumerism and disrespectful behavior. They are mostly, but not exclusively, from socialist countries:

  • The Little Mole | Czechoslovakia
  • Charlie Chalk | UK
  • Gena the Crocodile | USSR
  • Bojan the Bear | Yugoslavia
  • Professor Balthazar | Yugoslavia
  • Pat & Mat | Czechoslovakia
  • Pingu | Switzerland
  • Reksio | Poland
  • Staflík a Spagetka | Czechoslovakia
  • Winnie the Pooh | USSR
  • Frakk | Hungary
  • Our Little Sandman | GDR
