Verdun is a small town in northeastern France, on the Meuse River. Most of the town was practically destroyed in World War I. The battle which lasted 302 days is the longest and one of the most costliest in human history. The total death toll is 714,231 men.

The ossuary is a memorial containing the remains of both French and German soldiers who died on the Verdun battlefield. The ceiling and walls are partly covered by plaques bearing names of the soldiers who died during the Battle.
